Pierrefonds-Roxboro is a Montreal borough that hugs the shoreline of the Riviere des Prairies and Lake of Two Mountains on the northwest side of Montreal Island. Formed from an amalgamation of two former municipalities (Pierrefonds and Roxboro), this territory has had several incarnations. Pierrefonds dates to the 18th century, when it also comprised the contiguous areas of Dollard des Ormeaux, Ile Bizard and Ste. Genevieve. Roxboro, smaller in geographical territory, became a town in 1914; Pierrefonds became a city in 1958.
The two municipalities were united to form a borough during amalgamation with the city of Montreal in 2002. With a population of almost 60,000, the Borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro is one of the West Island’s largest municipal entities.
Despite its large swaths of suburban development, the territory also has large tracts of farmland dating back to colonial times, and two regional green-space parks.
