Baie d’Urfé is a quiet community that extends from the shores of Lake St. Louis northward to Highway 40. While it’s a suburb, the town maintains a countrified vibe with its absence of sidewalks and commercial town centre. It’s named for its founder, François-Saturnin de Lascaris D’Urfé—Marquis de Baugé, a French missionary of the Sulpician order, who established a mission in 1686 on what is known today as Caron Point.
A former agricultural community, Baie d’Urfé grew in the post-war period, but its population—about 4,000—is smaller than the populations of it neighbours. It’s the first Canadian town to establish a youth council that includes tweens and teens aged 10 years and up.
Baie d’Urfé boasts a beautiful cycling route along the historic Lakeshore Road, which runs parallel to Lake St. Louis.
