ASTROLOGY FOR MARCH – SPRING INTO A NEW SEASON

Pisces is the astrological sign that bridges winter and spring. Here’s what the 2022 Piscean season holds for us individually and collectively.

The astrological symbol for Pisces depicts two fish swimming in opposite directions.

The Pisces season heralds the transition from winter to spring in the northern hemisphere. All of the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces) provide a bridge between seasons; and as the last sign of the zodiac, Pisces brings the opportunity for us to integrate and release everything from the previous cycle in preparation for the new one.

Consider the Pisces symbol: two fish swimming in opposing directions. The traits that Pisces is famous for—peace, love and compassion—are rewards for navigating that inherent contradiction. For individuals with a strong Pisces or 12th house in their charts, the tendency to allow all things may feel like not having an identity, like being unseen or unrecognized. A more difficult manifestation of unbalanced Pisces energy is addiction to anything that numbs the pain of life.

The key to balancing the potential of Pisces (or any other sign) is to look to its opposite in the zodiac. When Pisces people seek a cure to feeling lost, disoriented, trapped or depressed, they can find it helpful to adopt the natural abilities of Virgo to find solace in the small pleasures of life. We cannot, for instance, underestimate the magic that occurs when Pisces taps into the responsibilities of maintaining the physical body under the auspices of Virgo: setting and keeping appointments, dental hygiene, balanced diet, daily walks, knowing limits.

This month, we may see more clearly what divides and keeps us from the wholeness that Pisces strives to find. Feeling unified, though, may seem more illusory now than ever.

Pisces season forecast

Neptune, the modern ruler of Pisces, has been working to dissolve old dreams and has been blurring our concept of reality since 2012. This work has been accelerated and exaggerated in recent months thanks to Jupiter transiting Pisces until May of this year.

This is a time to identify where we are dismissing reality to keep ourselves comfortably numb. The movement of Pisces is not to float aimlessly down the river of life, but to recognize and learn that the way forward is accepting the instability of not knowing the route.  Onward movement does not go back to the way things were (winter never becomes autumn) and we should remember that everything unfolding now nourishes the future.

A new moon at 12 degrees Pisces on March 2 is intensely coloured by the unprecedented alignments of Venus, Mars and Pluto in Capricorn, and Mercury and Saturn in Aquarius later in the day.

The juxtaposition of these events—the force and power channeled through Capricorn (government, material success and ambition), combined with the sobering reality of the meeting of Mercury and Saturn in Aquarius may bring some clarity to our direction. The awareness that emerges from this may usher in a collective “tipping point.”

The Pisces season allows us to access the “oneness” level of consciousness. We can take a shortcut to that feeling through drugs or alcohol, but a healthy and resourceful approach is to live knowing that we are not separate from each other and the natural world, despite appearances to the contrary.

The alignment of Venus, Mars and Pluto energies also contributes to the new moon, bringing a determined and uncompromising element to the events unfolding. It’s essential at this time to observe and balance the message of Mercury and Saturn (restraint and the wisdom to recognize what we don’t know). The transformation of societal structures is underway. Directing your energy away from anything that runs on autopilot, where unbending rules and red tape take precedence, can have lasting effects.

On March 6, the entry of Venus and Mars into Aquarius will echo the energy of Saturn’s entry into Aquarius in March 2020.  While their conjunction through Capricorn in February demonstrated a steady march without much friction, the energy of Aquarius has a different flavour and it may bring renewed value or attention toward independence and individuality.

Give your emotion and intuition space to roam when Mercury moves into Pisces on March 9, and again on the 13th, when the Sun (self-expression) conjuncts Neptune (inspiration). Paint, write poetry or music, and take advantage of the opportunity to bridge into a deeper consciousness.

Pay attention to your dreams, and nurture your visions by taking time for healthy withdrawal from the demands of the world and the expectations of others. Turn your focus toward the future you desire and then look for opportunities to apply yourself in that direction on the 14th when the Sun in Pisces sextiles the North node. Your future is unfolding as part of the bigger tapestry of the universe, but in this moment, you can decide what colour, shape and size of thread you bring to the collective.

Habits are difficult to change, but we can become aware of our addictions and reconsider what we’re doing to try to numb ourselves. Choose meditation over cannabis, or art therapy over an extreme spring cleanse.

The full moon in Virgo on March 18 will trine Pluto and shine light on the fear that keeps us from examining our feelings. The sensible and conscientious nature of Virgo helps to balance the boundless depth of Pisces, preparing us for another major alignment of planets in Pisces later in the month. If we can stay grounded through the currents of contradiction, uncertainty and illusion now, we can embrace the gifts of compassion, clarity and trust.
